Hogarth Chambers was formed from the merger of three leading intellectual property sets: Five New Square, One Raymond Buildings and Nineteen Old Buildings, each with a distinguished history. Following the merger of Five New Square and One Raymond Buildings in Spring 2001, the combined set adopted the name “Hogarth” in honour of the 18th-century English artist William Hogarth, whose efforts in Parliament contributed to the introduction of the first copyright protections for artists. The combined heritage of the three sets includes notable figures such as Sir Kenneth Swan QC, who played a key role in patent and registered design legislation; John Burrell QC, who contributed to the introduction of the Community Trade Mark; Sir Duncan Kerly, author of Kerly on Trade Marks; F E Skone James, co-author of Copinger on Copyright; and W H G Sunnucks, editor of Williams, Mortimer and Sunnucks on Executors, Administrators and Probate. Former members include Sir John Mummery, a Lord Justice of Appeal; Kevin Garnett QC, who served on the Legal Board of Appeal at the European Patent Office; and Julia Clark, a Chancery Master.
