Essex Court Chambers is a leading commercial barristers’ set with a distinguished history in international arbitration and complex multi-jurisdictional litigation. Established in 1961 as 4 Essex Court, it evolved from earlier practices and has played a key role in shaping modern commercial law. Members have been involved in landmark cases such as Carl Zeiss, Suisse Atlantique, Fiona Trust and Factortame, and many have progressed to senior judicial and arbitral roles worldwide. Notable members include Michael Mustill, Johan Steyn and John Thomas, alongside internationally recognised figures such as Rosalyn Higgins and Christopher Greenwood. Chambers has expanded its expertise across a wide range of commercial and public law areas, with members contributing to the development of arbitration law, including the Arbitration Act 1996.
