BSB appoints Helena Suffield-Thompson and Suzi Denton as independent reviewers

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) has appointed Helena Suffield-Thompson and Suzi Denton as new Independent Reviewers, strengthening external oversight of its regulatory decision-making processes.

The appointments were announced on 6 May 2026. The BSB said both reviewers will provide independent assurance that regulatory decisions are made fairly, consistently and in accordance with agreed procedures.

Helena Suffield-Thompson qualified as a solicitor in 1996 and worked as a criminal defence lawyer until 2013. Since leaving practice, she has served as a member of the judiciary and currently sits in three chambers.

According to the BSB, her wider regulatory experience includes work with the Health and Care Professions Council and the Parole Board. She has also acted as a Foster Panel Chair for both local authorities and private organisations.

Suzi Denton began her legal career as a corporate lawyer before later specialising in family and fertility law. She currently holds several regulatory and adjudicative roles across the professional discipline sector.

The BSB said Denton was appointed as a Legally Qualified Chair for the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service in 2022. She has also recently been appointed Chair of the Investigating Committee Panel at the Health and Care Professions Council.

Independent Reviewers play a supervisory role within the BSB’s regulatory framework. Their function is to assess whether decision-making processes have been followed properly and whether outcomes have been reached consistently and fairly. The appointments come as legal regulators continue to face heightened scrutiny over governance standards, transparency and procedural fairness across disciplinary and enforcement work.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, Steve Haines, interim director general of the BSB, said the organisation was “delighted” to welcome both appointees. He added: “Their combined breadth of experience will be invaluable in maintaining the integrity and transparency of our decision-making processes.”

The BSB did not indicate when the appointments formally take effect or whether the reviewers will replace outgoing officeholders. The regulator oversees barristers and specialised legal services in England and Wales and is responsible for professional conduct, disciplinary enforcement and standards regulation across the Bar.

Both appointments bring substantial tribunal and regulatory experience into the oversight process at a time when professional regulators across the legal and healthcare sectors are increasingly focused on accountability and external scrutiny.
